Open day  /  November 05, 2024, 2 to 6 p.m.

“Open Hub Day” at the Fraunhofer IWKS in Alzenau

Packaging accounts for a high proportion of plastic waste worldwide, and only a small proportion is recycled as secondary raw material. Artificial intelligence (AI) can help to reduce waste and keep resources in the cycle by applying it along the entire value chain for plastic packaging.

As part of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research's (BMBF) “AI Application Hub for Plastic Packaging” funding measure, AI methods are being used to improve the sustainability of plastic packaging. The application hub consists of the innovation labs KIOpti-Pack (design and production) and K3I-Cycling (closing the loop).

As part of the AI Hub and a partner in the K3I-Cycling project, we are opening the doors to our site in Alzenau on Open Hub Day and offering interested members of the public insights into our research in the project and beyond. The event is free of charge and is aimed at both laypeople and experts and will take place on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Brentanostraße 2a in Alzenau.

We will show you how modern technology and innovative approaches can optimize the material flows of packaging waste. Let's discuss the challenges in the recycling process together and find out how artificial neural twins (ANT) combine sustainability and economic efficiency. Find out how AI and sensor technology are revolutionizing sorting quality and what new strategies are being developed to identify plastics and other materials. We will also shed light on the impurities that make recycling difficult and show you how you can make a valuable contribution by separating waste correctly.

On site, you can take part in guided tours through our pilot plants and marvel at our sensor-based sorting system, among other things. Lectures, exhibits and interactive hands-on stations await you, where our researchers from the fields of bioeconomy, energy materials and magnetic materials will present their expertise and give you an insight into innovative recycling processes. Step into a sustainable future with us - we look forward to your visit!
